Mum shares ‘wild’ birth story where she gave birth to baby in front seat of car: ‘It just fell out’

A Perth mother has told the unexpected story of the birth of her second child, where she gave birth in the front seat of her car with her partner by her side.

In a video posted on TikTok, Mia Katson, 26, recounted the stormy events leading up to the birth of her daughter, who she described as “wild” and “beautiful”.

She explained that her work experience this time was completely different from the first one, where she was promoted.

This previous experience left her unaware that she was in labor until it was almost too late.

“I woke up Monday morning feeling great,” she said.

But by mid-morning, she began to notice a strange sensation in her lower abdomen that felt “like gas or constipation.”

At 40 weeks and three days pregnant, she hoped it was the start of labor but didn’t think it was serious.

Despite this, she went about her day as normal, taking her eldest daughter to swimming lessons before dropping her off at her mum’s house.

The turning point came during a routine midday checkup with her midwife, where the midwife performed a stretch and sweep, noting that she was already three centimeters dilated and could “stretch to almost four.”

While the midwife predicted the baby would be born before Friday, she assured the mother that the birth could still be days away.

By the time the couple returned home around 12:30 p.m., things began to escalate.

“I was doing jumps and rocks on the birthing ball and my partner was deciding whether to go for a run or pick up our daughter,” she recalls.

Thankfully, they decided that the eldest would stay at her grandmother’s house.

While her partner, Callum Rule, went for a jog, Ms. Katson jumped in the shower, hoping to ease the discomfort of some hot flashes he had.

“In the 20 minutes I was in the shower, the pain really increased,” she said.

But she still doubted she was in real labor, thinking the pain might just be irritation from stretching and wiping.

After trying to time her contractions and calling the hospital at 1:35 p.m., the midwife advised her to wait another hour to see if the pain subsided.

However, things soon escalated.

She tried to time the contractions, with some lasting three minutes, some seven and others 30 seconds.

“It was all over the store and very confusing. My partner was getting ready and then at 1.35pm we thought maybe we should call the hospital to see what they say because I didn’t know when you were going to leave for the hospital,” she said.

“The midwife suggested you leave it for an hour to see if it goes off, but if anything changes then go straight in. My biggest fear was going to the hospital and coming home, so I really wanted to work at home as long as possible.”

“Twenty minutes after the call, the pain got really bad,” she continued. “I could no longer walk or talk during the contractions. I started to panic about the drive to the hospital.”

At 2pm they finally left for the hospital, which was about 20 minutes away, but just as they were getting ready to leave, her waters broke.

“I was so excited because I knew it was real – we were having a baby,” she said.

What followed was a chaotic and surreal 11-minute journey that ended with the unexpected arrival of their baby.

“On the way to the hospital, I had two contractions on the way and thought I’d make myself drink,” she admitted.

By the third contraction, at 2.11pm, her baby “just fell out” after “three to four pushes” and was born in the front seat of the car on a main road.

“I shouted at my partner to back off and by the time he opened my door I had already pulled him out and had him on my chest. She came out pink and screaming, and we were shocked,” she said.

The couple called triple-0, and paramedics arrived within seven minutes.

But the young mum described the paramedics, who were “two blocks old”, as “a bit hopeless and unprofessional”, explaining that they debated in front of her whether to cut the cord in the car or take her to an ambulance.

“I ended up crashing into the ambulance, naked from the waist down, holding her baby’s cord still attached, as cars drove past,” she said. “They didn’t have towels, blankets or anything else.”

She also said paramedics did not help her up the ambulance stairs and she had to ask for help.

During the ambulance ride, she delivered the placenta, experiencing painful contractions with no pain relief and being told to “just relax” by paramedics.

The journey was incredibly stressful as she could see “a lot of blood” and recalled a previous postpartum haemorrhage during her first birth.

Despite losing 1.3 liters of blood and needing to stay overnight in hospital, she described the experience as “beautiful”.

“I know that for some people that story would be traumatic, but for me it was a positive experience,” she said.

“The only thing I’m sad about is the front seat of my car!”
