That’s not what crew members mean when they say pull the chute in an emergency.
A flight in Spain was evacuated after a panicked male passenger deployed the emergency slide while the plane was on the runway in sweltering heat.
“It’s been very difficult for all of us at the moment, there are people here who have lost contact with other flights,” a flying witness, who wished to remain anonymous, told Jam Press.
The Iberia Express flight was scheduled to fly from Ibiza to Madrid but was delayed after cabin crew informed flyers they would have to sit on the runway for 30 minutes before being cleared for take-off.
To make matters worse, crew members shut down the engines to refuel, leaving passengers without air conditioning in the sweltering heat.
The unidentified man reportedly reacted angrily to this setback and began to show signs of extreme nervousness.
“People started to get very nervous in general,” recalled the eyewitness, who was scheduled to stop in Madrid before continuing on to Alicante.
Things came to a head when the captain was preparing for take-off and the passenger jumped to his feet and said he couldn’t “take it anymore” and wanted to get off the plane.
When the crew members refused his request, Hellion accused them of carrying out a “complete hijacking”.
The crew members then notified the authorities, who arrived on the scene shortly thereafter.
Just then, the troublemaker decided to activate the emergency channel, causing panic throughout the plane.
“The pilot told us that the plane was stuck and we couldn’t leave,” said the eyewitness, who had to be evacuated from the plane along with the other passengers.
This absolutely funnel-The display forced many travelers to miss their connecting flights, including one who was traveling to Colombia and another who was “going to South Africa,” according to the eyewitness.
“In their case, they will have to sleep in a hotel in Madrid tonight and they still don’t know if it will be paid by the airline or out of their own pocket,” they said. After the exodus, passengers were forced to go to the Iberia Express counter and book their flights.
However, the eyewitness praised the airline for being “very good” after the ordeal, explaining that they provided “airport meal vouchers and an information sheet explaining our rights and how to make a claim”.
Meanwhile, the suspect was caught and could be charged with disturbing the peace and damaging an aircraft – charges for which he is likely to pay a hefty fine.
With his brazen action, the passenger joins the latest wave of people caught monkeying around with emergency gear, including a passenger last month who tried to open the emergency exit on a flight bound for South Korea.
